Breast augmentation is the commonest cosmetic surgery procedures carried out worldwide. For many women considering breast augmentation, the intention is to make a pleasing difference to the size of their breasts, whilst maintaining as natural an appearance as possible.

Having large breasts can be a cause of embarrassment and discomfort for some women and may interfere with their ability to wear well-fitting clothing and to exercise normally. Breast reduction surgery is designed to both reduce the size of a woman's breasts and to lift them into a better aesthetic shape.

For some women, pregnancy or weight loss can lead to a loss of volume and sagging (ptosis) of the breasts. This can be addressed by a breast lift, also called a mastopexy. This surgery does not change the volume or size of the breast, but by tightening the skin restores a more youthful shape and projection.

Nipples which point inwards rather than outwards may be present from birth or may be secondary to pathology within the breast. The development of new nipple inversion in one breast only should be investigated by a breast surgeon in the first instance.

Gynaecomastia, also known as “male breast enlargement”, is an uncommon condition which can be corrected with surgery. The extra tissue is usually a combination of fat and glandular tissue. If it is mainly fatty tissue, then liposuction alone can help, but often a cut around the nipple is needed to remove the firmer glandular breast tissue.
