The most common skin cancer that I treat is basal cell carcinoma, also called a BCC. It is a mild form of skin cancer where the cells over-produce and produce a change in skin appearance. They are sometimes referred to as a ‘rodent ulcer’. These are the most common type of skin cancer, and there is strong evidence to suggest that ultraviolet light from the sun (or sub-beds) can do long-term damage to the skin which may contribute to the development of basal cell carcinoma.
Fortunately, BCCs are very slow growing and usually remain in the outer layer of the skin. This type of skin cancer does not spread to other parts of the body, but if left untreated, can cause disfigurement. They are usually treated by surgery, radiotherapy, or cryotherapy. If tumours are small, the complete removal of the tissue for diagnosis can also act as a cure. Occasionally it is necessary to repair the area with a skin graft or another type of plastic surgery reconstruction.
I work with by all major Health Insurance Companies in the treatment of skin lesions and skin cancer.
