Anaesthesia for Larger Procedures: What to Expect

When you are planning a larger surgical procedure such as a tummy tuck, body lift, or breast surgery, one of the most common questions patients ask is about anaesthesia. Understandably, many people feel anxious about “going to sleep” for surgery, but modern anaesthetic techniques are extremely safe and designed with your comfort and recovery in mind.

At Rob Winterton Plastic Surgery, we use carefully selected anaesthetic techniques for bigger procedures, including General Anaesthesia (GA) and Total Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA). These are chosen to provide a smoother, more comfortable experience both during and after your surgery.

What is General Anaesthesia?

General anaesthesia is used for most larger procedures. It ensures that you are fully asleep, unaware, and pain-free throughout your operation. It is a well-established and widely used technique with an excellent safety record when delivered by experienced anaesthetists.

General anaesthesia can be delivered in different ways, including inhaled gases or intravenous medications. Both methods are safe, but the way anaesthesia is delivered can influence how you feel afterwards.

What is TIVA (Total Intravenous Anaesthesia)?

TIVA is a modern technique where anaesthesia is delivered entirely through an intravenous (IV) drip rather than using inhaled gases. It is commonly used as part of, or alongside, general anaesthesia for larger procedures.

This method allows very precise control of anaesthetic depth and uses medications such as propofol to keep you comfortably asleep throughout your operation.

Why We Use TIVA for Larger Surgeries

One of the key reasons we use TIVA for many of our procedures is the improved recovery experience it can offer.

Research has shown that TIVA is associated with:

  • Lower risk of post-operative nausea and vomiting
  • A smoother and more comfortable wake-up after surgery
  • A faster, clearer early recovery in many patients

Traditional inhaled anaesthetic gases, while still safe and effective, are more commonly linked with post-operative nausea and can sometimes lead to a less comfortable recovery experience.

Because of this, TIVA is often preferred for patients undergoing longer or more complex cosmetic procedures, where comfort after surgery is particularly important.

What This Means for You

Choosing the right anesthetic is an important part of your surgical journey. By using techniques such as TIVA alongside general anesthesia, we aim to:

  • Minimise post-operative discomfort
  • Reduce nausea and grogginess
  • Support a smoother early recovery
  • Enhance your overall surgical experience

Your anaesthetist will tailor your anaesthetic plan specifically to you, taking into account your health, the procedure you are having, and your individual needs.
